Senior Master Sergeant James Denis Packer Jr. was born on January 27, 1953, in Mobile, Alabama, and peacefully transitioned from this life on August 1, 2026, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, surrounded by his loving family. James lived a remarkable life filled with love, dedication, education, leadership, and service to his family, his community, and his country. His legacy of honor and commitment will forever be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

James was a proud graduate of Fairhope High School, Class of 1971. Shortly after graduation, he answered the call to serve his country and entered the United States Air Force in August 1971. Following basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in Texas, he received training as an Information Manager at Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi.

His distinguished military career would span more than 26 years, taking him across the United States and around the world. His assignments included Hamilton Air Force Base and Castle Air Force Base in California; Royal Air Force Upper Heyford in the United Kingdom; Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas; Fairchild Air Force Base, Washington; Pope Air Force Base, North Carolina; Clark Air Base in the Republic of the Philippines; and Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina.

After completing Aircrew Loadmaster technical training and Aircrew Survival training, James embarked upon an extensive career aboard the C-130 Hercules aircraft. During his years of service, he held positions of increasing responsibility, including Loadmaster, Loadmaster Instructor, Loadmaster Standardization Evaluator, Chief Loadmaster Evaluator, Assistant Flight Chief, Flight Chief, Chief Loadmaster Standardization Evaluation Branch, Loadmaster Superintendent, and Loadmaster Operations Superintendent.

In 1993, James was selected by name for assignment as Operations Superintendent with the Ninth Air Force Inspector General’s Team at Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina. In this demanding leadership role, he helped ensure the operational readiness of 37 tactical units encompassing more than 600 tactical aircraft, approximately 30,000 personnel, and $10 billion in military assets. He planned, coordinated, and conducted Operational Readiness Inspections and Quality Air Force Assessments and helped formulate inspection procedures, guides, and recommendations affecting Air Force operations.

James maintained his flying currency as a C-130 Hercules aircrew member throughout his career and accumulated more than 5,200 flying hours before retiring from the United States Air Force in August 1997.

His distinguished service was recognized through numerous military decorations, including the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Aerial Achievement Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, Combat Readiness Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait Liberation Medal from Kuwait, along with multiple devices recognizing additional achievements. Proud member of the Veterans of Foreign War and Free Masonry.

James was equally committed to education and lifelong learning. He completed the Noncommissioned Officer Leadership School, Pacific Air Command NCO Academy, and Senior Noncommissioned Officer Academy. He earned an Associate in Applied Science in Aircrew Operations from the Community College of the Air Force in 1995, an Associate of Arts from Saint Leo College in 1996, and a Bachelor of Science in Education, with an emphasis in Technical, Trade, and Industrial Education, from Valdosta State University in 2006.

Following his retirement from active military service, James continued his commitment to developing future leaders. In August 1997, he became a Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps Aerospace Science Instructor at Thomasville High School. Through education and mentorship, he shared with young people the principles that had guided his own life—discipline, integrity, responsibility, leadership, patriotism, and service.

Yet, beyond the uniform, medals, accomplishments, and titles, James’ greatest source of pride was his family.

James was the devoted husband of Fannie M. Packer, his beloved wife of 47 years. The two met and married while James was stationed at Pope Air Force Base in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Together, they built a beautiful life centered on love, family, faith, and commitment. Their union was blessed with their cherished daughter, Fawn A. Anderson, and James found tremendous joy in being grandfather to his beloved grandson, Semaj’ D. Stewart.

James leaves to cherish his precious memory his devoted wife, Fannie M. Packer; daughter, Fawn A. Anderson; grandson, Semaj’ D. Stewart; his loving mother, Carrie M. Packer; siblings, Genevia (Tommy) Taylor, Susan Packer, and Darren Packer; and his sister-in-law, Laura McLain.

He also leaves a host of loving nieces and nephews, including Carla Taylor, Duwan Taylor, and Kelvin (Tisha) Heard. James held a particularly special place in the hearts of Kaesen and Kade McLain, who affectionately knew him as “Uncle Grandpa.” He is also survived by four aunts and two uncles, along with numerous extended family members, friends, former colleagues, students, fellow service members, and all whose lives were touched by his presence.

James was preceded in death by his father, James D. Packer, and his brothers, Herman Packer and Earl Packer.

Senior Master Sergeant James Denis Packer Jr. lived a life characterized by service before self. He served his nation with honor, educated and mentored future generations, loved his family deeply, and demonstrated through his actions the meaning of dedication, perseverance, and leadership.

While his earthly mission has ended, the impact of his life continues through his family, the airmen with whom he served, the students he mentored, and the countless individuals fortunate enough to call him husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, mentor, colleague, and friend.

His family will remember his love.

His students will remember his guidance.

His fellow service members will remember his leadership.

And all who knew him will remember a life well lived and a man who served with honor.
