In Loving Memory of Elizabeth Portis Wilson

Elizabeth Portis Wilson was born on September 12, 1940, in Cuba, Alabama, to the late Howard and Pauline Portis. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and savior at a young age, joining Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Cuba, AL. She peacefully departed this life on June 18, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, strength, and devotion to family.

Elizabeth attended Cuba Elementary School and graduated from Kinterbish High School in 1958. In 1959, Elizabeth married Thomas J.Wilson Sr. and was blessed with five children.

Her faith was a cornerstone of her life. She was a devoted member of Truelight Missionary Baptist Church for over 50 years and later joined East Jerusalem Baptist Church, where she continued to serve and worship faithfully until the Lord called her home.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Pauline Portis, and her seven brothers and sisters .

Elizabeth will be remembered for her quiet strength, unwavering love, and dedication to her community. Her kindness, wisdom, and caring spirit touched the lives of many and will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. She was a devoted member of the Eastern Star and the Heroines of Jericho, organizations through which she exemplified service, compassion, and fellowship. She found great joy in feeding and caring for others, and her selfless acts of kindness reflected her generous heart and deep commitment to serving others. Her legacy of love, service, and compassion will forever be cherished by all who were blessed to know her.

She leaves to cherish her memory three sons, Thomas J. Wilson Jr., Carl Z. Wilson, and James

H. Wilson of Hattiesburg,MS; and two daughters, Jacquline (Hugh) Brown of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Fannie Hampton of Gulfport, Mississippi, and LaToya Wilson of Dallas, Texas. six grandchildren: Candice Brown of Dallas, Texas; Dejrae Wilson of Picayune, Mississippi; Carl Jackson of Detroit, Michigan; Sahara (Alex) Haralson of Jackson, Mississippi; and Justin Brown of Spartanburg, South Carolina. She was also blessed with five great-grandchildren: Cadence Jefferson, Kaden Handford, Kennedy Jefferson, Zuri Griffin, and Alex Haralson II, along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and special family friends Rose Ford.

Though she is no longer with us in body, her legacy of love and family will remain forever. She will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever cherished.

1958. Following graduation, she began a dedicated career that included employment with Murray Envelope Corporation, First National Bank, and Forrest General Hospital. Through her strong work ethic, professionalism, and caring nature, she formed many meaningful friendships and earned the respect of colleagues throughout her years of service until her retirement.

In 1959, Elizabeth married the love of her life, Thomas J. Wilson, Sr. Their union was blessed with five children: three sons, Thomas Wilson, Carl Wilson, and James Wilson; and three daughters, Jackie (Hugh) Brown of Spartanburg, South Carolina, Fannie Hampton of Gulfport, Mississippi, and Latoya Wilson of Dallas, Texas. In 1964, Elizabeth and her family relocated to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where she established deep roots and became a cherished member of the community.

In 1964, she moved to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and joined Truelight Missionary Baptist Church, where she faithfully served as an usher for 50 years. Over the course of her career, she worked at Murray Envelope Corporation, First National Bank, and Forrest General Hospital, eventually retiring after 15 years of dedicated service. Today, she holds her membership at East Jerusalem Baptist Church.
