Shelly Engberg Benson, 65, passed away at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson, MS on July 21, 2022.
Her memorial service will be held Friday, August 5, 2022, at Forrest Funeral Home, 1258
Richburg Rd., Hattiesburg, MS 39402. Visitation will be from 10am until 11am, followed by the
service.
Shelly was born on February 17, 1957 in Lincoln, Nebraska to Warren and Eleanor Engberg, who
preceded her in death. She attended Detroit Lakes High School in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota and
later attended the University of Minnesota where she obtained a Dental Assistant degree.
Shelly had many accomplishments including becoming a talented healthcare professional and
successful business owner of Lamar Healthcare and Rehabilitation in Lumberton, Mississippi.
She was a mentor and surrogate mother to many young women and saw many of them
continue on into successful careers.
Shelly is survived by her companion, David Crowson; daughter, Camille Benson; three
grandsons, Ke’Air Bautista, Marqus Benson, and Carter Benson; two brothers, Steve Engberg
and David (Joyce) Engberg; and the boys’ caregivers, Allie Hale and Kristen Steele.
Shelly’s main goal in life was to make others feel welcomed and loved. She started The Emma
Project, a non-profit organization that serves homeless students in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.
Shelly was loved by all who knew her and will be deeply missed.
