Obituary for Lela Spann

Lela Spann, 88 years old, of Hattiesburg, MS passed away on
May 8, 2022 at Wyndham House Nursing Facility in
Hattiesburg, MS. She was born on February 1, 1934 to
Stanley and Mary Lindsey in Beaumont, MS. However she
was raised in Hattiesburg, MS by the late Katie French.
Lela is preceded in death by her parents Stanley and Mary
Spann; Her husband, Ellis Spann, Sr.; Two children, Mary
Cooley and Anthony Sputnick Ray Spann; Two siblings, D.W.
Spann and Gloria Evans.
Lela and Ellis Spann, Sr. were united in holy matrimony and
celebrated over 50 years of marriage.
She leaves to cherish her memories, Eight children: Shirley
Williams of Sebastopol, MS; Dolly Hendricks, Ellis (Merrill)
Spann, Jr., David Spann, Jerry (Phyllis) Spann , Frankie Harvey,
Rickey (Carolyn) Spann all of Hattiesburg, MS and Verlena
(Jeffory) Williams of Baltimore, Maryland.
Also cherishing her memory are seven siblings: Christine
Williams, Elaine Posey, George Spann, Arthur Spann, Anthony
Spann, Tommy Spann and Randy Spann, all of Hattiesburg,
MS; Two sister in laws, Joyce Brown of Forrest, MS and Ruby
Jones of Lake, MS; Numerous grandchildren, great
grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and a host of
other cousins, relatives and friends.
At an early age Lela accepted Christ and joined Crusade for
Christ Church in Hattiesburg, MS where she served faithfully
as an usher until her health began to fail.
She received her education from the Third Ward School as
well as Earl Travillion Attendance Center. She also worked at
Forrest General Hospital for 15 years. She loved fishing,
cooking, working in the fields picking peas and other
vegetables for her family. She also loved wearing her
fashionable clothes with her many hats, jewelry and her
makeup and nails done.
