Obituary for Bettye Jean Carr

On Sunday May 2, 2021 at 9:05am, the sweet soul of Mrs. Bettye Jean Johnson Carr found peace and healing in the arms of the Lord. Bettye was born January 9, 1937 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi to the late Joe and Rosie Carter Johnson. She was the youngest of seven children born to this union. She loved being called “The Baby.” Bettye was christened at a very early age in Zion Chapel African Methodist Church where she was a loyal and dedicated member. She was a member of the Sanctuary Choir, the Sunday school and the Women’s Missionary Society.

Mrs. Carr and Mr. Ervin Earl Carr met while attending school in Hattiesburg. They found favor in each other and never wanted to be separated because of their love for each other, they became united in holy matrimony. Then with this union two daughters were born, Tamara Kay Carr and Sonia Michelle Carr. For these two daughters Bettye used her talent for sewing to make outfits for each day of the week for them and she stitched the outfits tighter with love, kindness and tenderness.

After receiving her elementary and high school education in the Hattiesburg Public Schools, she attended Pearl River College where she received an associate degree in nursing. She then worked at Forrest General Hospital for three years. Later she was employed at the University of Southern Mississippi as an LPN for 22 years.

Bettye was a devoted wife to her kind and loving husband, Earl and a loving mother to her two daughters and her beautiful precious granddaughter Kay, who lovingly called her grandmother “AnnMommie.” With a deep and abiding faith in God she was also deeply devoted to her two sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins, sister-in-law’s, brother-in-law’s and friends.

Bettye leaves to cherish her memories: a dedicated and devoted husband, Mr. Earl Carr; two daughters, Ms. Tamara Kay Carr, and Ms. Sonia Michelle Carr; one granddaughter, Kaydyn Michelle Carr Turner; fur baby, Rosy Carr; two sisters Mrs. Asalene Johnson Mack and Ms. Frankye S. Johnson. One sister-in-law Mrs. Ann Carr (her late husband John Carr), two brothers-in-law, Mr. Birl Jr. (Gwendolyn) of Chicago, Illinois. Mr. Willie Carr(Linda) of Matterson, Illinois, Mrs. Dorothy Hutchinson(cousin) and play sister, Rancho Dudumjonga, CA, along with a host of other cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends that will also cherish Bettye’s, memory.
