The Life and Legacy of
“Mother” Dora L. Hunter
“Mother” Dora Louise Hunter was born in New Augusta, Mississippi on March 3,
1927 to the union of the late Mr. Cleve Carter and Mrs. Nellie Carter. She was the
ninth of eleven children. She received her education in the local schools of Perry
County. On March 4, 2021, she answered her call to be with her Heavenly Father.
She slipped away peacefully in her sleep surrounded by her loved ones, transitioning
from life on earth to eternal peace in heaven.
Dora was a devoted wife to the love of her life, Mr. Thomas J. Hunter, for over 35
years. They were joined in matrimony in 1944. From their union came six sons and
four daughters.
Dora was also a very loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who
always put God and her family first. She was cherished by family and friends. Dora
was affectionately known by several names, including “Maw Maw”, and “Doree” by
those closest to her. She was cherished and adored by everyone who knew her.
Dora was a Caretaker throughout the city of Hattiesburg, Mississippi for many years
Due to her strong work ethics and dedication, Dora was well known and respected for
her sincere desire to help others. After many years she retired to spend more time
with her family. She was the “Mother of the Community” in Petal, Mississippi, as she
loved everyone and always made herself available to help anyone.
“Mother” Hunter dedicated her life to Christ at an early age. She was a longtime
member of Sweet Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, currently under the leadership
of Rev. Ricky Lindsey, up until the day of her Sunset.
Dora Hunter loved roses. She enjoyed spending time with family, being active in the
church, reading her Bible, watching her favorite TV shows, and collecting things
including dolls, unique what-nots, and especially pictures of family and friends.
Dora is preceded in death by her Father: Cleve Carter; Mother: Nellie Carter;
Husband: Thomas J. Hunter, Sr.; Sons: James Phillip Hunter, Thomas Hunter, Jr.,
Herbert L. Hunter,; Granddaughters: Phyllis Miller, Angela Washington; Grandsons:
Jerome Hunter, Jermaine Hunter, Richard Jamale Baker; Sisters:(formerly Carters)
Emma Griffin, Maggie Travis, Eddie Burkett, Georgia Barnes, Lola Mae Wade,
Doleain Magee, and Marie Lawrence; Brothers: Hillard Carter, Johnny Carter; and
Lifelong Friend: Elma T. Smith.
