Obituary for Jessie Mae Spencer
Jessie Mae Spencer was born on March 1, 1939, in Hattiesburg, MS to the late Jesse James Sanders and Mary Louise Sanders. She was the last of five children and grew up in a loving, Christian home.
Jessie attended 3rd Ward and Eureka high School. After school, she joined hands in marriage with Roy Curtis Spencer Sr. on July 16, 1955. Soon after she began a lengthy work career which span over sixty years and began at Phoenix Laundry and included at host of others such as: Cashios Cleaners, Richton Tire and Timber Co., Pine Burr Packing Co., Forrest General Hospital, University of Southern Mississippi, Petal School District, and HPSD. She retired from Petal School District in 2002.
Jessie accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. Soon after, she was baptized and joined Morning Star Baptist Church. She later transitioned her membership to Hattiesburg Crusade Baptist church, then to Greater Mt. Bethel Baptist Church, where she was an active member until her illness prevented her from doing so. She loved her family and her church. She also loved to see and hear of the good blessings that God has bestowed upon her family. This always made her proud! She loved family gatherings and reminiscing about old times. She was a hard worker, an elite cook, and friend to many. She also opened her doors to many and wouldn’t have had it any other way.
Preceding in death were her parents Jesse James Sanders and Mary Louise Sanders and her siblings. One sister; Nancy Ann Sanders, three brothers; Johnson Sanders, Lonnie Sanders and Charles Sanders, and one grandson; Cory Spencer. She leaves to mourn her passing, a loving and devoted husband for 65 years, Roy C. Spencer Sr., who remained by her side throughout her illness, one daughter; Linda (Ricky) Mayes, Atlanta, GA and two sons; Larry (Melba) Spencer Sr., Colorado Springs, CO, and Roy “Leroy” (Alfreda) Spencer. Nine grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends including two special friends: Mrs. Willie Lucas and Bertha Strickland.
