Obituary for Geneva Ling

4 “And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; and there will no longer be any death; there will no longer be any mourning, or crying, or pain; the first things have passed away.”—Revelation 21:4

Geneva Luvene Ling, our beloved mother, entered into eternal rest Sunday, July 5, 2020. Geneva was born February 17, 1937 in the Providence Community in Collins, MS. She was the fourth child of 13 born to Bemmer and Anna Luvene.

To say that she lived a full life would be an understatement. Mother was a quiet but fierce woman of God, a prayer warrior. She loved God and she experienced Him in every aspect of her life. Her children and children’s children have been sustained due to her countless prayers on their behalf.

She was a super smart woman despite leaving high school early. A world traveler despite hating airplanes. A first class cook/chef despite no formal culinary classes. An excellent teacher despite no degrees. A nurturer, she cared for many, both young and old, and was loved as “Ms. G.” Many were blessed to taste the fruit of her labor. Literally, thousands enjoyed her culinary skills, be it in her own home; at the Shaw Lanes Bowling Alley Snack Bar that was named after her where she was a short-order cook for 27 years; at the Shaw Youth Center where she worked until she was 78 years old; or at her beloved church, Hopewell Baptist, where she served in several ministries including the kitchen ministry.

She is survived by her children: Arlene Ling and Rose Ling of Charlotte, NC; and Edgar Ling (Mandy Bumby) of Beaverton, OR; grandchildren, Tyler Ling of Napa County, CA; and Blake Ling and Amaya Ling of Beaverton, OR. A special nephew she helped raise, Keith “Chip” Magee of Grand Prairie, TX. Her siblings: Allean McClinton of Los Angeles, CA; Ella Mae Basurto of Gulfport, MS; Billie Smith of Tacoma, WA; Jewel (Terry) Revies of Hattiesburg, MS; John Luvene of Tacoma, WA; Rev. James Luvene of Dyersburg, TN. Special family friends: Arthuree Johnson & family, Geneva Russ and family, Deacon Charles Harris, Gary and Anne Hall, Rosa Davis; and Geneva Angevine and family. Adopted sons and daughters: Steve Adams and Seiya Adams; Debra Smith and Deandra Smith; Tasha Johnson and Detuan Johnson; Kaldejia Faulk and Valencia Gadson. And a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
